November’s ‘Mind Yourself’ Tips

By Lisa Dunbar | Blog | 0 comment | 30 November, 2020 | 2

Accept Help
I’ve mentioned before how I’ve always been a bit of a perfectionist. When I struggled with my mental health it was tempting to try to hide it and try to fix it all myself, but I realised that accepting help and support from others is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of wanting to get better. Whether you realise it or not, I bet you have a team of people in your life ready and willing to listen and help you – let them!
I’m lucky to have a lot of supporters, the biggest one being my husband Ciaran. This page is about health and my business – I wouldn’t have either if it wasn’t for him. This 7th November is the 4th anniversary of the day we vowed to be there for each other “in sickness and in health”. We really had no idea that sickness would come so soon afterwards! But true to his vow, during that time Ciaran was my nurse, my confidante and my counsellor. Now he’s my motivator, my cheerleader and my (sometimes reluctant!) photographer! Happy Anniversary Ciaran xox

Laugh
It’s true – laughter is the best medicine! As well as helping to reduce pain, improve blood flow and boost our immune system, laughter makes us feel happy and relaxed and helps us deal with stress. When anxiety strikes me I head for You Tube and watch some snippets of Jason Byrne, he’s hilarious!

Get Involved
Connecting with new, like-minded people can be really positive for our mental health. I recently performed in The Wizard of Oz with Stage One New Musical Group. Of course, it was a bit intimidating when I first joined the group 6 years ago, but I’m so glad I overcame my nerves and did it! I’ve made great friends, had amazing laughs and been part of some fantastic productions that I can be proud of! What are YOUR hobbies? Where can you find your like-minded peeps?!

Sleep
We all have busy lives, and getting 7-9 hours of snooze time can seem like an impossible task sometimes. But sleep is as important to our bodies as breathing! We’re all guilty of deprioritising sleep over things like watching another episode of a box set…we’ve all done it! So let’s make sleep a priority, ok!? Your body and mind will thank you!
